Reflexology Charts

The earliest form of Reflexology is at least 5000 years old and was practiced in Egypt and China. Modern reflexology was brought to North America in 1913 by Dr. William Fitzgerald and was developed in the  1930's and 1940's by nurse and physiotherapist Eunice D. Ingham. It was at this time that the practice known as 'Zone Therapy' became known as Reflexology for the 'Reflexes' Ingham mapped on the hands and feet that related to areas of the whole body. The Ingham method is still one of the most popular methods of Reflexology. The two most common methods are the Rwo Shur method, practiced more in Asia, and the Ingham method. The Rwo Shur method uses a more firm approach using knuckles and sometimes small sticks to apply pressure. The Ingham method uses mostly the thumb and fingers to apply pressure and pressure is varied according to a patients tolerance. Both methods as well as new approaches still use the same theory of 'zones' or 'reflexes' laid out according to Reflexology Charts. Although charts from different sources may differ slightly, they generally follow the same zones set out by Eunice Ingham in the 1930's. Use of a good clear chart is extremely helpful, especially for non-professionals who may want to practice or learn reflexology. Reflexology can be performed on the Foot, Hand or Ear and has been shown to relieve tension and stress. Try it yourself: Massage your hand or foot and find a tender area, and apply pressure to it by gently pressing with your thumb in a rubbing motion. You will find that this ancient technique can improve your overall well-being and bring relief to many areas of your body that are ailing you.
